Mac soft renderer architecture?

I'm trying to get my feet wet with the software GPU code, at first by making some trivial changes (e.g. invert colors) to familiarize myself. However I'm on a mac, and I've never done C development on a Mac so I'm simultaneously trying to figure out the Xcode build process and the plugin code itself. Additionally, it looks like there's OpenGL code in the software renderer code, so I'm a little confused. If anyone could shed some light on any of this so I can start fumbling around, I'd be grateful.
